Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Unless the Blessed Sacrament is to remain exposed on the day following the Nocturnal Adoration vigil, benediction must terminate the night of adoration.
About five minutes before the end of the last hour of the vigil, the priest or deacon vested in alb or surplice, stole, and cope, enters, genuflects, and kneels before the altar of exposition (Ritual, 97).
A hymn is sung ― either the traditional Tantum Ergo or any other Eucharistic hymn. During the singing of the hymn, the priest or deacon incenses the Blessed Sacrament (ibid.)
Down in adoration falling,
Lo, the sacred host we hail;
Lo, o'er ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying
Where the feeble senses fail.To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Spirit blest proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty. Amen.After the hymn, the celebrant rises and says: (The following prayer is only one of the seven optional prayers in the Ritual, 98, 224-229).
Let us pray: (A short pause is made.)
Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your suffering and death. May our worship of this sacrament of your body and blood help us to experience the salvation you won for us, and the peace of the kingdom, where you live and reign for ever and ever.
All: Amen.The celebrant puts on the humeral veil, genuflects, takes the monstrance, and makes the sign of the cross with it over the people (99). After the blessing, the Divine Praises are sung recited (100).
Blessed be God.
Blessed be his holy name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.
Blessed be his most sacred heart.
Blessed be his most precious blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the most holy sacrament of the altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and immaculate conception.
Blessed be her glorious assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, virgin and mother.
Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.The Blessed Sacrament is then reposed. If the place of reservation is different from the altar of exposition, the celebrant takes the Blessed Sacrament to the tabernacle (93).
