MINISTRIES AND PROGRAMS

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND FAITH FORMATION
Saint Jean's offers the following catechetical programs and initiatives:
Kindergarten Program
for children ages 3-5 in our special Montessori-style
Atrium,
a unique
environment
for the young child that fosters a sense of the
sacred and is
adapted to a child's
learning needs.
(Wednesdays, 3:30-4:15).
First
Communion Preparation
for First and Second Grade students.
(Wednesdays,
4:00-5:30).
Third and Fourth Grades continuing
education toward the sacrament of
confirmation.
(Wednesdays,
4:00-5:30).
Confirmation Preparation for junior high and high school
students. Young
people
in this
age group who have not received First Communion can participate
in classes
and
receive
First Communion at Easter. They will then be confirmed
along
with their
classmates in late
May
or early June. (Tuesdays, 5:00-6:00).
Rite
of Christian Initiation of Adults
for non-Christians who
wish to learn more
about
Catholicism.
Christians
of other
denominations are welcome to participate.
For those who
wish to be in full
communion with the
Catholic Church, preparation
for
the sacraments of initiation at Easter requires at least one full cycle
of the
curriculum.
(Sundays, 1:30).

LET THE WORD SPEAK!
Weekly Bible Study on the Sunday
Scriptures.
Come together with others to read and pray and
share God's word. Sessions
are
led
by a
member of
the parish staff and run for one hour.
Straightforward. Practical. Prayerful.
The Bible Study meets in The
Founders Room at the Parish House on Tuesday
nights (except on
holidays and during the summer) at 7:00. All are welcome!
We will resume Tuesday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m.
JUSTFAITH
JustFaith,
a 30-week adult educational and formational program, offers an
opportunity
for
parishioners to experience a spiritual journey into compassion
in which
participants
can grow in their commitment to care for the vulnerable
and to
become advocates for
justice.
JustFaith
is an intensive program of reading, videos, study, and reflection on
Catholic
Social Teaching. In addition to weekly meetings, the commitment
includes
two
weekend retreats (the first given here at the church, with people
going home
at night;
the second at a retreat house in May of next year), and
four immersion
experiences
with the poor. These may include, but not be limited
to, a
shelter, a soup kitchen, etc.
Coordinator: Jean Prendergast.
FAMILY LIFE
MINISTRY AND MASS
Each month from
September through May, a Family Mass is celebrated on the
third
Sunday
at 10:30. Children and families participate in the ministries and
actions of
the
liturgy in
various ways, and a social
usually follows. All are
welcome!

Both
are complemented by excellent instrumentalists.

OUTREACH TO
THE WIDER COMMUNITY
The Gospel calls us to lives of witness and service in the name of Jesus
Christ.
Saint Jean Baptiste supports several ministries which express this
commitment.
Saint Jean Baptiste
High School
serves young women from throughout the five
boroughs, providing an excellent education in an environment where values,
the
dignity of each person, and the responsibility of contributing to church and
society
are
emphasized.
An important part of our outreach to the neighborhood and city around us is
our
Saint Jean Baptiste Community
Center, a unique space for parish events,
community programs, family celebrations, and cultural, educational, and
social
activities. E-mail
John Lantry , the Director, or call
212.472.2853, ext. 1, about
scheduling your event in the beauty and comfort of our former Lower Church,
now the Saint Jean Baptiste Community Center.
Saint Jean Baptiste Church is a contributing
sponsor of two community-based
entities which serve
the
needy and the homeless ― the Yorkville Common Pantry
and the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter.
